If someone has spread the gospel
of dance and inspiration in Latin America, it has
to be Hernan Cattaneo.
His deep progressive house tracks with twisted tribal
beats have been trailblazers across dance floors.
Growing up in Buenos Aires, this Argentine, took to
music quite early on in his life. In 1987 a friend
of his got him a collection of Chicago House in the
form of Traxx and DJ International pressings, featuring
artists like Derrick May and Inner City. This got
him going. Mesmerized by this new sound, young Hernan
soon scored a residency in a small club in Buenos
Aires. And very soon he was being invited to play
in clubs throughout South America.
With his popularity chart zooming
in 1996 he landed a residency for a new weekly Saturday
entitled ‘Clubland’. The entire music
world wanted to gobble him up and he was given the
chance to share the booth with prominent DJs including,
John Digweed, Carl Cox and Paul Oakenfold, to name
only a few. Hernan’s eclectic deep house and
progressive sets meant that Cream chose him as their
South American Resident. His talent was rewarded in
the form of ‘Best DJ Award’ in 1996 and
1997. His reputation crossed international borders
and along with Paul Oakenfold he went to Europe, enthralling
folks throughout, which led to Perfecto signing him
up for both ‘South America’, a mix complication
and ‘Deep Funk’, his first original production.
1998 and ’99 saw Hernan tour
the States with Oakenfold which playing in many a
highly profile venue and event like Red Rocks Amphitheater
in Denver and Nevada’s Burning Man. A stunning
70,000 fans enjoyed his gigs at Channel 4’s
Clapham Common extravaganza in the summer of 2001.
The very same year he won the ‘Best Newcomer
DJ’ at the Pacha Ibiza awards. His remix of
Morgan Page for John Digweed’s prestigious Bedrock
imprint was an immediate chart buster. Renaissance
came up with an offer to mix their next ‘Master’s
‘compilation. The album from Hernan was critically
acclaimed. The Hernan success saga continues, at a
music store near you.
