Erick
Morillo, born 1971, is a very famous
DJ, producer, and record label owner. He has produced
under a number of pseudonyms including Ministers De
La Funk, The Dronez, Smooth Touch, RBM, RAW, Deep
Soul, Li’l Mo Ying yang, and Club Ultimate.
His house music has taken the world by storm and he
is best known for his 1993 hit ‘I like to Move
it’ released by the label ‘Strictly Rhythm’.
This track was produced under the alias ‘Reel
2 Real’ and went on to feature in movies, ring
tones, and commercials.
A magnetic figure, he is also known
for his keen business sense and his fantastic skills
at the turntables. His Sublimal Records was started
in 1997 and since come a long way. Erick’s
sounds are characterized by chunky, funky house sound.
In fact, his signature sound is sometimes dubbed as
being what else but ‘Sublimal’!
Morillo was actually
born in New York but raised in different parts like
Colombia and New Jersey. His music was influenced
by Latin, rap, and reggae, when young. He got behind
the decks when only into his teens and was soon doing
gigs at local parties. His talent was spotted by Nervous
and Strictly Rhythm. His track ‘The New Anthem’
released under the moniker Reel 2 Real was released
by Strictly Rhythm and an international star was born.
This was followed by ‘I Like
To Move It’ and very soon he was doing gigs
all around the globe. His first tour to Europe and
Australia was a mega success. He is involved with
everything from packaging to the look and feel of
his label Sublimal, along with his partners Harry
Romero and Jose Nunez. His amalgam of soul, funk,
house, and fantastic vocals are always party ready
and send fans into frenzy.
With over hundred releases Sublimal
records is a legendary label known for quality dance
music. Sublimal records has been honored with the
‘Best Label’ award at the Muzik Awards
twice in 1999 and 2000. Morillo has
thrilled legions of fans at events like the Annual
Sublimal Sessions at Crobar during the Winter Music
Conference and behind the decks at his residency at
the Ministry of Sound. He also holds court at Ibiza’s
Pacha nightclub regularly. Morillo has been named
the ‘Best International DJ’ in 2002 and
‘Best House DJ’ in 1999 and 2001 at the
Pacha Ibiza Awards.
