Armand
Van Helden has a barrage of album productions
and remixes under his belt. This talented DJ cum producer
has been recording for famous labels like Strictly
Rhythm, Logic, and Henry St. A string of hits starting
1996 onwards has made him a central figure in the
club scene. One of the most famous producers around
in the scene, Van Helden spent time
in Holland, Turkey, and Italy while growing up. Since
his father was an Air force Man, he used to get relocated
frequently and this gave the youngster an opportunity
to explore different genres of music in all these
countries at a very young age.
As a young kid of 13, he had a drum
machine and very soon two years after he was DJing
mostly hip hop and freestyle. Helden attended college
in Boston and this came as a boon to him. He was very
soon doing local gigs and gained a residency at Boston’s
superclub Loft. His residency catapulted the fame
of the club and it became the most popular club in
the city. He released his ‘Move It to the left’
by Sultans of Swing in 1992 and later on in 1994 came
his ‘Witch Doctor’. Witch Doctor quickly
became a dance floor anthem around the world and got
him international recognition.
His remix skills saw him mix some
of the hits of Deep Forest, Faithless, New Order,
and Jimmy Somerville, among others. The year 1996
onwards Van Helden was a name to reckon with when
it came to remixing. He did remixes for leading artists
including Janet Jackson, Puff Daddy, Rolling Stones,
and Sneaker Pimps, to name just a few. His singles
too continued to come out at more regular frequencies
with massive hits like ‘Cha Cha Cha’ and
‘The Funk Phenomena’, along with the release
of his first album ‘Old School Junkies’.
He released a retrospective album
in 197 and then came his party breakbeat album ‘Sampleslayer’,
a chart buster. His ‘2 Future 4 U’ EP
followed in 1998. The Valden saga continued with ‘Gandhi
khan’ in 2001, ‘Funk Phenomena: The Album’
in 2003, ‘New York: A Mix Odyssey in 2004 and
‘Nympho in 2005. Trust Van Helden to better
himself in the near future.
