Fatboy Slim

Quentin Leo Cook alias Norman Cook, better known as Fatboy Slim, was born on 31 July, 1963 in Bromley, Kent, England. Growing up in surrey, he initially started out in his musical journey playing bass guitar with Housemartins. His first solo success came with a remix of Erik B and Rakim’s ‘I Know You Got Soul’, which reached # 13 in the UK charts in the late eighties. Soon he collaborated with Ashley Slater under the name Freak Power and came out with the popular ‘Tune In, Turn On, Drop Out’ single which featured in a Levis jean commercial in 1995. He successfully dabbled with house music as Pizzaman in 1994, which saw him top the charts with a number of top 20 hits including one with Loaded Records, ‘Tripping on Sunshine’. It was during this time that he began to write in a unique style that went on to be known as ‘big beat’. It is a unique combination of hip hop, rock, trance, house, breakbeat, and rhythm and blues. He joined hands with newly formed Skint Records as Fatboy Slim. The first release was ‘Santa Cruz’, with his signature sound very much visible.

Mega hits like ‘Everybody Needs a 303’ from the album ‘Better Living through Chemistry’ followed. In 1998, he released one of his most successful albums to date, ‘You Have Come a Long Way, Baby’. The album had super hit singles like ‘Right Here, Right Now’ and ‘The Rockafeller Skank’. He has also worked with the Southern Fried Records as Mighty Dub Katz, coming out with notables like ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ and ‘It’s Just another Groove’. ‘You Have Come a Long Way, Baby’ also had the mega hit single ‘Praise You’, which topped the UK chart apart from catapulting him to international stardom. The same year saw him win a BRIT award for best producer, apart from three MTV video awards.

Cook’s ability to gauge his audience’s pulse and his ability to combine elements of rock and dance has meant that he has been popular wherever he went around the world. His funky break beats and the influence of a variety of styles make him a one-of-a kind DJ. His marriage to television and radio personality Zoe Ball has meant that he constantly remains in the limelight, thanks to the tabloid coverage. Cook though continues to be a simple person with a light-hearted attitude and a wonderful fetish for coming out with fabulous music.
